In my opinion, this is one of the main reasons our churches are so split and why we act more like the world rather than more like Christ. This doesnt mean that they have to agree on the minutest points in areas where there is no clear teaching in Scripture. The Factions At Corinth In 1 Corinthians, Paul consciously avoids disciple-teacher language. This is what Paul uses as the basis for unity in this church -- not only the attitude of selflessness, which is the mind of Christ, but the responsibility to submit to his Lordship, the common responsibility that we have together. Then youre a Christian right? Even though our conversation could only continue for about 10 more minutes, this issue of divisions within the church arose. This is the result of a religious snobbery associated by cliques that produced pride and conflict. One of the celebrities was Paul himself some believers at Corinth actually claimed to be his followers. 1 Corinthians Problems in the Church That, of course, is as it should be. Yet, in reality as long as correct biblical doctrine is being taught no pastor should be viewed in comparison to one another. Corinthians One day in Africa, a small boy was lost. Splits and Quarrels in the Church On a large jigsaw puzzle of a thousand pieces or more, its almost impossible to put it together upside down! These are two common causes of church divisions in the West. That is why Paul calls us back to it. Are we willing to love each other as Christ loved us? 4-The churchs failure to discipline. 2- The Churchs division. As we read through First Corinthians, I think we will see how very much like modern day churches this ancient church of Corinth was. Public arguments were commonplace in the Greco-Roman world at the time that Paul was writing to the Corinthian church. That was the mark, that was the identification badge. In this passage of Scripture, Paul is very careful to focus the attention on Christ and not on himself. Aside from this acceptable division within the modern church, there are also two other reasons for division which should not exist. It is a serious threat to the life of a church to find people choosing favorite preachers, to the degree, at least, that they do not want to listen to anyone else. the Problems in the Corinthian Church Gods people who are moving in revival (like we have been to experiencing right here in Brisbane these last few months) have no qualms about getting together to see the nation of Australia come to Christ. Maybe if they are getting rid of core doctrine it is a justifiable anger but I can definitely see how the church is very much the same as 2000 years ago. 4-The churchs failure to discipline. Not when we hear of churches with factions or cliques of people who sit on opposite sides of the aisle. With that spirit of self-righteous smugness, they were separating from the rest, dividing up the congregation and quarreling with one another over these things. I believe that if people would take their eyes off man and stop putting man up up so high and put THE MASTER BACK FIRST in their lives it wont be so much division in our churches. There are three different causes of divisions in churches that Paul mentions in I Corinthians. Their conflicts undoubtedly had its theological and philosophical dimensions, but it was social as well, human and petty, high on pride and low on love (Polhill 233). They will not all be the same flavor; they will not all have the same characteristics. Some people will pick other matters of doctrine to affirm. (1Corinthians 1:13 RSV). Church has become about the pastor and not about his message. Paul is going to go on to describe this radical force that is so different than anything else there is nothing like it in the world. Divisions never really ended with Pauls letters; they just appear to have evolved into having more sophisticated names. Some considering Paul their authority, other Apollos, others Peter, and still others accepted only Jesus as their authority. There should be unanimous agreement. The Corinthian Church. When you call them back to an understanding of the meaning of the cross, you will find all the divisions disappearing; they fade away like the morning mist. This unintentional mindset causes people to treat the Bible and its words like it is a product that can wear out, and ignored like an infomercial. Paul goes right on, in Verse12, to describe the forms that these divisions were taking in the church of Corinth: What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas" [another name for Peter], or "I belong to Christ." This Bible was pushed by the Navigators, and everybody had to have one. Each group claimed to be better than the others, and party spirits began to grow in the church. The families have been seated. They are his family in Christ. Paul doesnt want these divisions to continue, so he offers them an alternative. In comparison to modern churches, its easy to say that there are hardly any divisions among Christians and differing churchesbut could these divisions still exist today? I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. Just as there was competiveness for honor and prestige among the orators of the first century, it also seems like there is competition between the pastors and churches of today. Within our churches, and even in our own denominations (sophisticated name for divisions), we argue about church funds, whos on the worship team, and whether the youth should have long hair. Now, the Apostle Paul is very concerned about this matter of incipient division in the church at Corinth, and he begins dealing with it in this powerful appeal for unity in Verse10: I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. Christians are all disciples, or better, stewards and servants of the mysteries of God (1 Cor 4:1). I dont remember Paul seeing any thing like these issues as other than trivial. We see similar situations today, with political debates often devolving into a shouting match in which the person who yells their opinion the loudest and the longest is the winner. Paul wants the Corinthian church to mend the broken relationships that have been caused by the divisions among its members. 2- The Churchs division. WebAnd you know, that gives me some idea of how important this is to God, because from 1:10 to the ninth verse of the sixteenth Chapter, he just talks about the errors in the church. The first thing Paul says is that it tends to chop up Christ and parcel him out as though his person and his work came in various packages, thus you lose perspective of the whole of Christian theology. So we have the possibility for this very thing right here. They failed to take seriously the power of evil; their behavior caused divisions in the church and led to a lack of concern for other members. Today we have followers of Rob Bell, Rick Warren, and even Joel Osteen (for some reason). I would like to start off with a quote (forgive me for the length) from Polhill that I found to be all to strikingly familiar of todays churches. This division in the church was over their own selfish ambitions evidenced in what they wanted. The first and perhaps biggest is denominations. Instead of directly saying that we follow Paul, or Apollos, we say that we are Baptist, Reformed, or even Catholic.
