V&A

Project

On the last Friday of every month, the V&A Museum celebrates contemporary art and visual design within society by hosting V&A Lates. It's used as an opportunity for V&A to collaborate with emerging creative talent and create an environment where the public can experience a unique take on culture and exhibitions.

‘Old Marble New’ is an interactive art installation that invites visitors to remix and re-render a piece from the museum’s world-famous sculpture gallery.

Using digital scans of the collection, guests can manipulate, texture and warp priceless works of art  -  then render them as animated GIFs for their social media.

The concept for our submission began when Robin Barnes (Stink Studios' 3D wondergenius) discovered an extensive, open-source, library of V&A sculptures that we were able to be customize and alter freely.

We wanted to explore a concept where these scupltured could 'leave' the static exhibition space and be brought to life in a virtual and free environment - an environment where users could remix and customize the priceless scupltures standing infront of them in a contemporary and thought provoking way.

Our submission, Old Marble New, allowed visitors to the V&A Late event to create an original piece of digital artwork from inside the Sculpture Gallery, bringing 'IRL into URL'.

Ultimately, users could store their remixed creations into a virtual exhibition space where they could see other visitor's sculptures.

They were also able to share their own on social networks and with friends, expanding the reach of the virtual (and literal) exhibition space.
